Rays of Hope by ElessarTelcontar Rays of Hope by ElessarTelcontar
***UPDATE***
Replaced original file with a higher saturation one. Hope that helps. :)
************

Shot at the Calicut beach in August, 2009.
My first go at HDR photography, 5 JPEGs at +-2 EV steps.

And the title doesn't have anything to do with the pic :p

All comments and :+fav:s appreciated :)

Shot with the usual Canon PowerShot SD870IS Point and Shoot camera, freehand, no accessories.
Lens: 4.6-17.3mm (28-105mm equiv)

It's really pretty. And the fact that you took this picture from the beach at my homeland makes it even more special to me. :)

Sort of, I'm Malayali from my father's side. We do go home at Calicut for Christmas and Easter and for all the other festies.

Oh, a fellow indian! Do you mind me asking from which state you're from? :)

Aha! Nice!

Me, my home is in Delhi, but I'm studying at NIT Calicut right now. I'm in my final year though, so will shift permanently to Delhi in May this year. =)

Sorry for the late reply, I don't check dA much any more.

If you would like, please message me on Facebook instead?

When I was little I used to think that rays of sunshine like that is where angels came down to earth. Maybe they are...

Anyway, I like this. There is a nice balance between the sky, sea and sand. A very hard thing to do in a shot like this.
However, overall, it is lacking a certain something that really makes you go "wow!"
Maybe if you could get more colour into the sky and sea, it would make more of an impact? I'm not sure.

umm ok i updated the image too. replaced this with a higher saturation image, and removed ghosted birds at bottom left (5EV steps composite :aww:. can't believe i left the ghosting out earlier. x___x )
do have a look if you like, and lemme know if it's better now?
thanks. ^____^

:)

thanks a lot for your feedback. about the nice balance, let's just say i got lucky ^____^
i know what you mean by it doesn't make you go "wow!". it definitely doesn't pop out, so to speak.

the original pic i have on my lappie, it's a bit more saturated than this one, but when i submitted it it automatically lost some colours. idk why this happens. it happened on another submission too: [link] :(

i'm working on another similar shot atm, and i like it better than this one ^___^
if you want, i'll link you once i submit it?

thanks ^__^

Very nice!

I really like the effect of the rays of the sun with this piece. It adds more depth to things for sure... and it works well with the title too.

I like how the clouds fill up the sky more, as if saying that without them, the rays of hope wouldn't happy, which is kind of ironic, because clouds can signify suffocation, fogginess and so on.

The composition is good and the colours aren't too bad... it all feels quite natural, anyway.

A bit more saturation wouldn't hurt... but I think that would ruin the atmosphere. I find it interesting how straight the horizon is as well, but one could mistake it to be tipped, maybe? :P

Lovely stuff, nevertheless. :)

i never thought about it that way :)

umm well the horizon isn't straight :p it just looks straight, so it seems :XD:
and umm about the saturation... umm well the pic stored on my computer, it's more vibrant than what it shows here. umm something similar happened here: [link]
idk why that happens :(
it's true that it should be a little more vibrant... i feel the same way. :(

and umm sorry to bother you time and again but i updated it again with a png instead of a jpeg. looks like there was a problem with the gamma correction and pngs also store the gamma correction values so this should be better. x)

I think it is a very lovely shot, though the top bit needs a little work. It's too bright and some areas of the clouds are slightly too dark. But as for the colors of the rest of this shot, it seems nice and evenly bright (a spot on the ocean also seems a tad too bright)

thanks a lot for your feedback! :)

hmmm now that you mention it, yes it IS a bit TOO bright... i washed out some details. -_-'
i upped the contrast in that area, but i guess i overdid it xD
oh well i can't achieve purrrfection with the experience i have i guess :)
will keep on trying. ^_^

thanks again, it is constructive feedback like this that i'm looking for :)

You're very welcome :D

Not very many people on dA know constructive critisism, right? :( it's a pity since we have so many artists with good potential who are letting it all go to waste with all the sugary-coated fluff they recieve :(
